LOUISVILLE, Ky., May 2 /PRNewswire/ — Fresh off his impressive 73/4 length win at the Dubai World Cup on March 29, Curlin, the 2007 Horse of the Year, will make a special appearance during the 134th Kentucky Derby this Saturday. Fans will have a chance to view Curlin parade on the track and head into the paddock area prior to the fifth race.
Owned by Jess Jackson, founder and proprietor of Kendall-Jackson Winery, Curlin has become a crowd favorite among racing fans throughout the world. A special announcement regarding Curlin’s future will be made on Derby Day.
“He is in great shape and as long as he is fit, we’re going to let him run this year,” said Jackson. My family and I love watching him run. I realize that this is not the conventional career path for a horse like Curlin, but I’m not sure there’s ever been a horse quite like him.”
Curlin, who recently turned four, was honored at the 2007 Eclipse Awards as the “Horse of the Year” and “Three-year-old Male of the Year” at a Beverly Hills awards ceremony in January. The Eclipse Awards are given each year to horse racing’s top performers. More recently, Curlin made the trek to the Middle East for the world’s richest race and did not disappoint, winning by a record margin.
Curlin’s accomplishments when racing as a three-year old are particularly noteworthy. Curlin’s historic 2007 racing campaign saw everything from the colt “breaking his maiden” to winning the 2007 Breeder’s Cup and The Preakness, finishing third in the Kentucky Derby and second in the Belmont Stakes — all in the span of eight months.
